Effects of Self-esteem, Achievement motivation, Self-efficacy & Self-directed learning on applying Problem Based Learning in Nursing students : Longitudinal analysis

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the problem-based learning(PBL) on the self-esteem, achievement motivation, self-efficacy, and self-directed learning in nursing college students.

Method: The study design was time-series design. PBL teaching method was applied during major nursing curriculum. Data were collected in the end of the academic semester over a 3-year period (2009-2011). Obtained completed data of 186 participants were analyzed. Data were analyzed by SPSS 20.0 program using descriptive statistics and repeated measure ANOVA.

Result: Self-esteem and self-efficacy after applied PBL was significantly increased as the grade levels rise. Self-directed learning was increased until second year completion and then it was decreased in third year completion but the overall effect was increased significantly. There was no change in achievement motivation.

Conclusion: The present study that PBL may help to influencing the self-esteem, self-efficacy and self-directed learning of nursing students. Future studies will be required to ascertain the PBL effects including other factors. However, our studies using a single group is a limit to generalize because did not set up a control group.
